Happy New Year's Eve...blah!

I didn't get to run last night and it has made me a bear all day long.  It was raining and cold last night.  I can take both on their own, but not together.

Our office closed today at 1, but I was there until my normal time.  Blah.  Then my run tonight was in a word, painful.  I hated every step.

I am looking forward to spending NYE with Ian and having fun with friends.  No drinking for me since I am having surgery on Tuesday.  Double blah!

Happy New Years!

Run florist, run!

Miles 6.09

Neighborhoods - Old 4th Ward, Midtown, VA Highlands, Poncey Highlands

Tonight's chilly run included Heath Alan and we had a great run.  He wasn't very talkative though and I finally just gave up.  I was trying to yodel and make conversation, but all that florist could do was breathe.  I felt really good tonight and hope it carries over into tomorrow's run with Frontrunners.

Today was my pre op visit with the doctor and then I worked from home the rest of the afternoon.  My stats were good.  Pulse 45, respiration 16, blood pressure 120/80, temp 96.8, weight 9lbs 6 ozs.  I am ready to get my eyelid surgery over with.  A week from today I should be high on drugs.  Thank goodness Ian will be with me so that I don't walk out into traffic or eat a dog treat.

I forget how much I dislike Rachel Ray until I hear her on the tv in the other room.  She has totally ruined my blog for tonight.  Ugh!

Well, more tomorrow.  I can't believe 2010 is right around the calendar.

Swedish Stalker (Saturday Dec 26th)

Miles  8.81
December Total 78.3
Pace 8:13
Neighborhoods - Vero Beach, FL

While in Vero Beach for Christmas, I seized the opportunity to run in mild weather on flat terrain.  I did a decent 8.8 miler and I really thought it was ten miles.  I think I may have lied and posted that on Facebook, but wasn't able to check my mileage until today.

At about mile 2, a very tall and healthy blonde woman appeared in front of me.  I quickly caught up with her and forgot about her until I started to cross over the river bridge and she appeared from a side street.  She had taken a shortcut and I was having none of it.  I crossed over the bridge, but she did not.  I then ran back over the bridge and went into the quaint shopping area of Vero Beach on Ocean Drive.  I made my way through shoppers and tourists and headed back out onto A1A.  Waiting for the walk signal, she ran by me.  I am like, 'please, please'.  So, again, I passed her.  This time she spoke.  I got a good look at her nordic features and decided she was a Swedish Wrestler.  Her voice was very deep, "Great run" she said.  I quickly concurred and ran for my life.  I guess she turned off again as I didn't look back to see.  I didn't look back until I got home and safely behind the locked door.  Crazy!

Well, that's about it.  I don't know if I will run tonight...it's so windy and cold out.  But I probably will.

Short and sweet!

Miles 5.17
December Total 69.49
Pace  8:06
Neighborhoods - Poncey Highlands, VA Highlands, Morningside

I did a short run tonight, mostly because I ate too many sweets today.  Karen gave me a box of Chocolatiere truffles and I had two of those.  I gave her some M&M's and I had 10 of those.  Ugh, the holidays.  My boss Susan gave me cute dessert plates and a bottle of Baileys (score) with glasses.

Ian and I leave at 7 in the morning for Vero Beach.  I have every intention of doing a 10 miler or more while I am there.  The weather is supposed to be in the 60's and 70's.  It may be raining, but that would make it more interesting.  I can't pass up the opportunity to run in prime conditions.

I won't be posting til I return on Sunday.  I am leaving the Macbook at home.

Merry Christmas to everyone and safe travels to everyone that will be on the road or in the sky.

VA Highlands

Well, I did it.  I ran right down that street with my shorts on.  I did my longest run yet, this season.  I was by myself, as my training buddy didn't respond to my texts.  It started out a nice night, 50 degrees, and I was able to catch the sun going down as ran toward downtown.  The skyline was dark as chocolate against the pink and peach night sky.  I ran through the World of Coke Christmas lights and then through Centennial Park.  I also ran by the ice skating rink.  There were a lot of people out and about and it really felt like the holidays.  The Nutcracker is playing at the Fox Theater and I had to dodge theater goers and snow.  Yes, SNOW!  The Georgian Terrace Hotel had a snow machine blowing snow onto their patio and entrance.  I don't know why.

At about mile 7, I started getting really tired and got a chill.  Up until that point I was nice and cozy.  I couldn't get home fast enough.  As I neared the corner of Ponce and Frederica, I saw blue lights flashing.  There was an accident right in front of my building.  They pulled the mangled cars into our drive and it was quite the scene.

Now, done to the nitty gritty.  For Ian's birthday yesterday we did mani pedis.  Yes, you heard me.  We are secure in our manhood and that is what we wanted to do.  Bad idea for me, knowing that I was going to do a long run today.  My supple soft big toes are now killing me.  There is a reason runners let callouses build up on their big toes, protection!  And one last thing that I now remember from training for the half marathon.  Any time I run over 8 miles, I should wear band aids on my nips.  I know, I am training for the Breast Cancer marathon and it might be in poor taste to complain about my nipples, but I am a man after all.

Well, gotta run.  I am sweating like a whore in Church with a $5 trick preaching the sermon.

It took a while this morning for me to get motivated.  After several phone calls, I finally rolled out of bed, suited up for a run and took Gracie for a walk to warm up.

I took my time running today.  Not too much to report other than a lot of traffic.  The weather was perfect and I look forward to my long run tomorrow.

Parties tonight, better get piping on the cookies!

Big Frozen Vagines!

No, this post has nothing to do with running for boobs, or drug addicted rodents.  This post is about other lady parts.  I really don't know where to begin.  Wait, I do.

Ian is a member of this alternative art/music venue called the Eye Drum.  Membership has it's privileges and boy did it come in handy tonight b/c our membership cards allowed us free admission to what would have been a $10 show.  If I had paid $10 to see what I saw tonight, I would have clawed somebody's eyes out, probably Ian's.

You all know I am a punctual person.  I love being on time so I can watch other people come in and then issue my commentary, which is usually colorful and funny, sometimes hurtful, but entertaining nonetheless.  We arrived at 8:55 and much to my surprise there were few seats left.  Now, being in the insurance industry, I am sort of an amateur risk analyst and when I saw they had a 'balcony' comprised of pieced together wooden boxes, I commanded that we sit down on the floor.  Boy do I regret that because the two chairs we found were so uncomfortable.  We might as well have been sitting on the concrete floor.  Shudder!  The show was to start at 9 p.m. but the terror didn't start 'til about 5 snowflakes past 9:30.  I was somewhat entertained by Ian asking me if I hated him and the PBR he bought for me from the bar.  And by bar I mean ice chest.

By now I am sure you have dissected the picture above and you noticed the name of the hostess for the evening was Vagina Jenkins, Jenkins pronounced Jankins.  She was a lovely buxom lady of ample stage presence.  She was voted best burlesque dancer in Atlanta, so I was kind of excited.  However, she was just hosting.  She teased us with a red leather outfit that showed a good bit of chest, but she was just teasing.  I wanted to stand up and yell, "take it off Effie!"  Her sidekick was Johnny Drago.  He was a talented enough writer and performer, but I am pretty sure Drago is not his real last name.  And with the performers he lined up for the 'variety' show, I wouldn't have used my real last name either.

The first act was a lesbian in man drag and a drag queen performing lip sync to Tony Bennett Christmas songs.  "Sacrilegious!" came to my mind many times.  The worst part of their routine, was when she (he), wait, he (she), dammit, when the drag queen came out with a huge white muff.  It looked like it was made out of a Snuggie or a Slanket.  The drag king pulled the large muff away to reveal a smaller muff until...you guessed it, it was down to her muff.  Bartender I'll have another PBR.

Ok, two acts were aerial artists.  Props to them.  They didn't kill themselves or fall on anyone in the audience.  The one girl performed in a hoop hanging from the ceiling.  She did it in stilettos; two snaps for Miss. Saigon.

Two acts were tolerable.  I didn't want their heads to explode like I did the others.  The first act, two guys were dressed as Santa and Rudolph.  Perhaps dressed is being polite.  One had on a Santa hat and the other guy had on antlers, and not much else.  They were really good dancers, at least Rudolph was.  Yawn, next.  The other act that I woke up for was Dickie Van Dyke.  Yes Virgina, that really was a dyke.  She (he) was dressed as Elvis and performed her (his) own vocals for 'Santa Claus is Back in Town'.  She stripped down to pasties and men's briefs.  I was so confused.

Lastly, I can't even begin to describe what happened with this one act.  His (her) name was 'ambientdischord', it should have been 'ambiencocktail' because it put me right to sleep.  Dressed in a pvc red latex dress and white platform boots, 'ad' performed two original songs that, had he (she) worn looser underwear, might not have been so bad.  I have tried to block out most of it, but I do remember him (her) telling the audience to scream 'revolution' when he screamed 'queer'.  Up until now he (she) had been singing in a high pitched purr, but all of the sudden he belted out 'queer' in the gruffest voice.  I think three people yelled back 'revolution'.  By this time I was calling in a bomb threat.

Wait, that wasn't the last thing.  The host, Johnny Drago (again not his real name) performed a play that he wrote, directed and starred in.  It was funny enough and I am happy I got to use Ian's membership card to see him perform.

So, that was our night in a nutshell.  A big ole fruitcake infused nutshell.  I appreciate Ian's desire to support the arts, but in the words of Ouiser in 'Steel Magnolias', "I can nap at home for free. "

It's late and I have to get up and run tomorrow.  Thanks for reading and have a great weekend.

Super Freak!

Miles 5.79
December Total 50.25
Pace  7:35
Neighborhoods - Poncey Highlands, Old 4th Ward, Midtown, VA Highlands

Ok, tonight I ran with Frontrunners and I was a Super Freak.  I was running way too fast and my big toe is telling the tale now.  Ouch!  You know how in my past posts I go on and on about the Christmas lights? Well, I don't remember seeing one friggin' light.  I was concentrating on staying upright.

The Frontrunners pushed me on and rather than slowing my pace, I had to shove on so I wouldn't be last.  Ego trumps pain.  Thankfully James' iPod quit on him so that threw him off his game.  It was that little Jesse that came up from behind and took my status as Frontrunner from me.  He sprinted ahead the last tenth and I just couldn't hold him back.  Though we finished just seconds apart.  I got his number now.

Today was uneventful at work.  My boss adores me.  Marie adores me.  I adore me.  Scarlett liked the post about her last night.  She said she knew all along that 'chili' was appropriate in the title.  I say, bullshit.  She is smart, but slow.

Cheers go out to Heath Alan as he drives to Maine.

Chili Night Run

Miles 5.09
December Total 39:33
Pace  7:46
Neighborhoods - VA Highlands

To my friend Scarlett, who reads my blog faithfully, you can put down the phone and save your breath.  I intentionally titled this entry 'chili'.  Scarlett loves to edit my blogs, emails, and life.  By far, I am able to catch more mistakes on her correspondences.  It's like Christmas every time I find an error.

Tonight was a great run as evidenced by the numbers above.  I started out slow, thinking I would just mosey along since I ran last night and will run with Frontrunners tomorrow.  I felt really good and decided to kick it up a gear.  I decided to run a zig zag pattern through VA Highlands to take advantage of the Christmas decorations.  I ran up one street, down the next, then up again, over and over.  Of course I kept repeating hills.  If I had been running flat, my time would have been sub 7.  Ha!

Now, to tie my subject line in.  Tonight Heath is having a chili night at the Studio to celebrate our ad in the Atlanta Bride magazine due out on news stands next week.  The ad looks great and we are very proud of it.  Once we get done with the Bridal Show in January, hopefully bookings will start rolling in.  I have to believe they will.

Well, off to the showers.  What does one wear to a chili supper.  Plaid?

Fred The Squirrel - A tale of drug addiction and recovery!

The same story has been told a thousand times.  Squirrel falls from tree.  Squirrel is rescued by a passerby.  Squirrel is named Fred.  Fred is fine for the first couple of months.  Nuts are cracked and provided.  Water is plentiful.  A stuffed Nemo is provided as a substitute for his sister that didn't make it.  Fred is let out of his cage to roam around the house, but he never strays far from his domain.

It was bound to happen.  Fred gets bored with everyday items such as pecans, bread ties, wooden boxes, he needs something more.  While everyone was rustling around after lunch, he sees his chance.  His mistress turns her back for a moment and he seizes upon her pill box.  Inside the box is a pain pill, stool softener, nerve pill, and restless leg pill.  He can't discern which is which, but he thinks that they are most beautiful nuts he has ever seen.  Seconds later the lady realizes what has happened.  The family is put on alert and the search is on for the pills.  He is known for hoarding nuts, so maybe he put the pills away for later.  They find bits and pieces of the nerve pill, the entire pain pill, and the stool softener.  They never found the restless leg pill or about 3/4's of the nerve pill.  Fred takes a turn for the worse.

His master gathers him up and settles in his chair for what he is sure is the last call for Fred.  Fred is lifeless, limp, barely breathing.  His heart rate is usually fast as a stop watch, but now it's struggling to make one beat.  Tears are shed.  Goodbyes are said.  Then, suddenly,  the paparazzi camera snaps a picture of the dying wire walker and with haste, Fred bolts awake.  Everyone is astounded that he is alive.  A miracle!  His hind legs are lifeless.  He wobbles when he walks.  They give him water.  He vomits.  They give him more water and he once again becomes lifeless.  He repeats this cycle three times during the evening and everyone decides he is going to make it after all.  Everyone goes to bed and hopes for the best.

His master wakes up at 5 and rushes to Fred's cage to check on him.  Fred is standing at attention, tail curled and chattering for attention.  No visible side effects are noticed.  It's as if nothing ever happened.  Just as Fred scampered about his domain, he catches a glimpse of the pill box.  His eyes get big.  He darts for the grid of heavenly nuts.  Just as he reaches them, the mistress puts them away in the cupboard.  Fred chatters a bark of disapproval but realizes that this is what needs to happen for his recovery.  Recovery is slow, recovery is hard.  We can only hope that Fred sees that his life can be just as full without those magical nuts.  I am putting my money on Fred.

I didn't think I was going to get to run tonight.  It was raining pretty good when I got in but I decided to bite the raindrop and get out there.  Just about the time I got to the street, it stopped raining and just continued misting.

It was a foggy day on our return trip from visiting Mother and then Pops and Grandmama.  We had a great visit.  But the weather was not nice at all.

Looks like I will have a full week of marathon training since I am not going to Maine.  Yay!

Ok, I have another post to get done concerning everything but running.

Times they are a changing!

No, this isn't a post about a new time I logged, though my times have been really good as of late.  This blog is about something I spotted this morning on the way to work.

I was driving up Morning Side and in front of me, in the distance, I could see a Mercedes S Class with it's flashers on.  I figured they were picking up a child for school or something.  All of the sudden, something was being tossed out the window in a white plastic bag. I thought, are they throwing out drugs?  Then I realized, she was the paper lady, throwing newspapers out the window of her Mercedes Benz S Class.  It was 8:30 in the morning.  I mean, what happened to waking up with the newspaper already at your door.  Also, what happened to the newspapers being thrown from bicycles or from cruddy, broken down mini vans with exhaust spewing into the atmosphere.  Is nothing sacred anymore? All that being said, kudos to her for making do with what you have.  I mean, I am sure she would rather be tossing her papers from an old Ford Windstar or rusty old Schwinn, but alas, all that is available to her was her S Class.  Maybe Santa will bring her a new bike.

Ok, that had nothing to do with running, but was a fun story to tell.

Wild and Crazy Wednesday

Miles 6.67
December Total 34.51
Pace  7:51
Neighborhoods - Poncey Highlands, VA Highlands, Lullwater

I ran with Frontrunners tonight and it was a mild and windy evening for the run.  Lullwater proved to be a treacherous street for night running.  There was not a single street light on that stretch and it was hard to see sticks and debris in the road that had been blown down by the high winds.  I hope we don't put Lullwater in our rotation again unless it's a Saturday run.  Yikes!  I still had a pretty good pace, but I could totally feel the hard long run from Sunday and the fast short run Monday.

Today was a stressful day at work.  My company laid off more people today.  It's sad that decisions like this are made at the holiday.  I am grateful that I still have a job, but the last year and a half has been a roller coaster.

I am watching Cake Boss now, just had my dinner.  Waiting on Glee to come on.  Love Glee!

This is my last day of running this week because Ian and I are leaving for Mississippi after I get off work tomorrow.

Too bad Tuesday

I didn't run tonight for two reasons.  One is the weather, it's just awful.  Rain, wind, and cold.
Second, Heath and I had a reception to attend for Atlanta Magazine's Bride edition.  We are excited about the Jan issue that is soon coming out.  Can't wait for everyone to see it.  The Bridal Show will be in January and we have a lot of work to do before then.

Today was uneventful.  One funny item was Mother sent me a text and I responded LOL.  She texted back and asked what LOL meant.  I told her, laugh out loud.  She responded, well, I don't think it's funny, I thought it meant Lots of Love.  I kinda like that one too.

I hope to get to run tomorrow as it will be my last run this week since Ian and I are headed to MS on Thursday night.  We are coming back through Alabama to visit Pops and Melinda.  We should be back on Monday.

Everyone stay dry and warm.  And by everyone, I mean the 4 people that read my blog.

I ran with Frontrunners tonight and we had an awesome run.  We took advantage of the cool night to run through Olympic Centennial Park to see the beautiful Christmas light display.  The big tree was awesome with the twinkling white, green, and red lights.

I had my best pace yet tonight.  I was the Frontrunner and I can thank Rich Hart for that.  He pushed me onward.  Even though I ran a similar pace yesterday for 8 miles, I felt great tonight.  I think I will have to take tomorrow off though to make sure I don't injure myself.  I was surprised that I felt as good as I did this evening.

Great day at work.  It was freezing in the office, but I was productive.  My boss Susan, my muse for this marathon, was yelling at me most of the day because my offices in Tennessee were hacking away at our revenue forecast like Tiger Wood's wife at an Escalade!

I am already tired.  Nothing like a great workout to make you rest well.  Oh, my condolences go out to the lady who died after finishing a half marathon for St. Jude's in Memphis.  32 years old...so sad.

Miles 8.10
December Total 23.49
Pace  7:45
Neighborhoods - Poncey Highlands, Old 4th Ward, Midtown, Piedmont Park, Morningside, VA Highlands

Thanks to James Pope for running with me this afternoon.  We had a great run and considering all of the hills, we had a very satisfying pace.

It was a bit chilly, but not noticeable at all once we got moving.  We saw a lot of dog walkers and a few other runners.  Sunday seems to be the day to buy Christmas Trees, we saw several of those tied to tops of cars.

We were only heckled once and that was by a fellow Frontrunner, Tom Jung.  Hopefully he was going home to rake his yard.

So training is coming along nicely.  I was very pleased with my run today and it really helps to have a friend run along on the longer runs.  Even though they have their earphones on!

Some days you have it and some days you don't.  I ran tonight out of guilt.  I ate a bunch of M&M's today and I knew that with each crunchy bite of those red and green candy delights, I would have to make it up.

My pace was really off tonight, as you can tell.  I ran basically the same mileage that I ran on Wednesday, yet I was almost a minute per mile slower.  I think running with Frontrunners serves as a booster for me.  Tonight I had nothing chasing me but the M&M's on my butt.

I guess I shouldn't be so hard on myself.  I should be training at different paces for the marathon.  It's not like I expect to run all 26 miles at a sub 8 pace.

I hope to do a longer run on Sunday.  No less than 8.  Maybe the weather will be nicer.  It certainly was chilly this evening, but at least the wind and rain were not beating me up.

Gracie is happy to see me.  I am all sweaty and cooling down as I type and she is on the bed sucking her monkey.  The life!

Beating the Rain Under a Full Moon

Miles 5.16
December Total 10.26
Pace  7:54
Neighborhoods - VA Highlands

Nothing like the threat of heavy rain to get you motivated.  I ran with Frontrunners tonight and you can see that my time was a considerable improvement over Monday and Tuesday.  I ran sub 8 tonight and it felt great.  Well, not so much great as relieved.  I just looked at the map and the rain is just crossing the perimeter, just in time.

I didn't have to give the hand or the finger to anyone tonight.  The motorists were being extra careful tonight for some reason.

Today, in the office, we had colleagues in the office from NY.  Several of us were standing around my desk talking about my new blog and running the marathon.  My boss is still not sold on 'boobies' and Stephanie, from NY, said she had no problem with breast euphemisms.  Right at my desk she blurted out 'tits'.  Susan cringed.  Still, Running for Tits, makes me blush a little.  I still think Boobies is the way to go.  Ta Ta is over used.

No pictures tonight.  I think I will take my iPhone on my next run so I can take a few pics of Christmas decorations.  The moon was really pretty tonight, full.  The clouds were rushing to obscure it, but I caught a glimpse of it once or twice.

Well, my eggs are cooling.  Tuna salad again tonight, but I also have a homemade pecan pie that has to be eaten. Oh, and Glee is on tonight, my fav!

This is the voting sticker I received tonight after I voted for Mary Norwood!  It's stuck on my reflective running vest!

Running for a Vote!

Miles 5.10
December Total 5.10

Neighborhoods - Poncey Highlands, Midtown, VA Highlands

I hadn't planned on running tonight, but the weather man is calling for a cold rain tomorrow.  I decided to run tonight and in the process, cast my vote for Mayor of Atlanta.  I was about 16 minutes into my run when I made it to the polling station and boy was it hot in there.  I wore my knit hat, cause my ears get cold, and the lady asked me to raise it up so she could see my hair.  I should have taken it off anyway since the poll was in a Church.  Rude!  I hope that when I wake up tomorrow, our new Mayor will be Mary Norwood.

From here on out you may notice that I will use the term, 'give 'em the hand', which means when a vehicle is approaching a crosswalk too fast, I will put my hand out to catch their attention or to push myself off of their hood or bumper.  Well, I had only had two instances tonight that I had to give 'em the hand.

One of my friends, and fellow Frontrunner, cat called me on Highland and I gave him the bird.  Which is not to be confused with 'the hand'.  Totally different.

The highlight of the run, after voting, was running by the Christmas Tree tent on Virginia Avenue across from John Howell Park.  It smelled so frickin' good.  The neighborhoods are coming alive with lights of all colors and decorations galore.

Well, I hope to run tomorrow with Frontrunners, but if it's a cold rain, I will probably not make it.  I love running in the rain, but not a cold one.

Ian and I are going to try and install a counter on my website that counts down the days to the marathon.  Stay tuned for that.

Oh, and to the two large ladies holding hands on Highland, taking up the entire sidewalk, 'HUDDLE UP' girls.

Peaceful Running!

It begins now!

Hi friends, I am starting this blog to chronicle my training for a marathon on February 21st, 2010. I have chosen to run The National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer in Jacksonville, FL.

The title for my blog might offend some, namely my boss, for whom I chose this marathon. She is recovering from breast cancer that was diagnosed earlier this year. She hates euphemisms for breasts, but Running for Breasts just didn't roll off the tongue. She will just have to suck it up.

This is my first marathon. I have completed a half marathon and many 5K's and 10K's. I am a little nervous, but I know that I can accomplish this with my family and friends cheering me on.

I will do a daily update with my accomplishments, goals, pains, and funny stories along the way.

I began, in earnest, training last week. To recap last week:

Monday 4.8 miles 8:10 pace.
Tuesday 4.5 miles 8:03 pace.
Wednesday 5.0 miles 8:07 pace.
Saturday 4.8 miles 8:11 pace.

The holiday threw my training off a little bit, but I am pleased with my efforts.

I ran 4.77 last night at a 8:00 pace. It was a brisk, windy run with Frontrunners. I didn't take any Advil beforehand like I usually do, and at about mile 3, my lower back really started hurting. By mile 4, the pain had passed. I sprinted the last .25 mile and felt great.
